After my tutorial, I went back to Pinterest to look some things up and ended up adding more to my boards, looking for ideas..

I also found this on Pinterest - this is what I need to be aiming for with my work. It looks so much cleaner and better than mine, but very similar. I need to work more on this way of working, and refine it! Get it up to this standard. This has also helped me answer the question of eyes and legs! (something which I have had difficulty trying to make look right..

Also, breifly started looking into camouflage, found a couple of really cool boards..

I also remembered the hunting camouflage pattern (it's on some of the clothing we have at work) here's a couple of examples from google..

This has got me thinking if/how I could possible create something similar themes around the city/urban sparrows..? Possibly working into a pattern similar to the one at the top by Mel Buchanan...?

REALISATION: Blog entry 3

After my tutorial it's become clear that I just need to do lots more research, like so much more research;
-Pattern design/designers/theory (have a look in the library for some books)
-Practitioners - lots more
-William morris
-Timerous beasties

I had been thinking about splitting the RL into smaller groups, to narrow it down a little. After doing lots or research into why each species is endangered, and the current conservation projects the RSPB has embarked upon, I settled into looking at the Farmland initiative (concerning birds such as; skylark, corn bunting, turtle dove, grey partridge, lapwing, yellow wagtail, and tree sparrow), there are also separate projects which focus on birds such as the cappercaillie, the cuckoo, and urban house sparrows. 

By splitting it into groups, I would be able to do something a little different which appealed to different audiences, to aid with the conservation effort of our british birds and red listed species. 

However, Tim mentioned that to start with it might be interesting to just focus in on one bird, and to really get into it, and this would give me an idea of what could be done with this idea and this project.

I think I'm going start with the house sparrow, something so boring and ordinary, but it is the one that I have the most ideas for so far, and the issues surrounding house sparrows aren't just that we might lose house sparrows.

The reason house sparrows have made the RL is because they are struggling to find food. The lack of invertebrates in city centres is something that has a much bigger impact than just the possibility of losing another species of bird (this also affects other types of birds such as starlings). 

However, the other bird that I find really interesting is the cappercaillie...I may focus on two? not sure yet, something that I will decide on later.

I'm also aware that come concept panel, I am probably going to be questioned about the relevance of working with pattern...I need to have a good answer. My main thinking was that, pattern is very fashionable an d appealing right now, and I wanted to use that for good, to appeal to a wider audience, and use it along side conservation efforts that are already in place to make them more appealing.

So, my new action plan is to do lots more research, but also to focus in on one type of bird - the sparrow (for now any way). I hope that in doing my research more ideas will come with regards to the other birds on the RL.

12 weeks eek!

Just had a tutorial, am just making a note of some of the things that i need to look into later - for both the dissertation and the concept modules.

-(Dissertation) what time frame/era will I focus on?? (was thinking of a breif history/few eaxmples, and mainly focusing on more contemporary artists/practicioners.)

PP&M: Blog entry  24

Today I have had tutorials regarding CW2  for the Debates module, and for the Personal Practice module.

In the my personal practice tutorial, I talked about my past few pieces of work, and have decided to pursue the idea of selecting, editing and obscuring the text (Blog entry 23 & blog entry 18) in the coming weeks I will experiment more with this idea, try different things, have a look at some typography artists to get some ideas, and see where this takes me. At the minute my plan is to pick out a few main things from the text (maybe..infinity, 26 characters, the punctuation - I need to think about it more, and maybe re-read the text again) and produce something similar. I also need to look into getting this printed on a larger scale, and begin working to that scale (find out how much/how long it takes for this too). I think having this on a larger scale just makes the viewer see it differently. For the whole project we have all been reading prints outs of PDFs..to have a large image of the text presents it in a whole new light, lets you see it differently. I was set on the idea of producing a book, or a series of books, but now I'm starting to see the value of having this piece printed on a much larger scale, as far away and un book like as possible, to make the viewer see the text in a different light.

However, all of this may have a wait a little, with CW2 looming, and due next friday, I really need to focus on that, especially seeing as all I have right now is a pile of books to read and some rubbish ideas. We also have the concept panel coming up the Monday after..so i really should crack on with that too. I plan to make a couple more little experiments, to further explain my point, and show where this idea is taking me, and in my presentation will discuss my future experiments, possibly show them to get opinions; I cant decide between a normal white background black text approach, or the black background with white text; which lends it's self more to ideas surrounding the universe...I need to think about this more, see some of my experiments on a larger scale, I'm sure it will become clear which way I go when I see it.

On the upside, being so busy with other aspects of the course might give me the little break I need from this work to be able to move forward with it. And of course, once these two things are out of the way I can crack on and get some serious work done, however the blog might be quiet for the next 2 weeks.
