PP&M: Blog entry 12
I have never used watercolours before in my life, but i got some for my birthday, and have spent the past few days playing with them...I love them. Why have I never used them before, they are wonderful!
Any way, I started out just playing with them, seeing what could be done with them (see below - small sections off different bit of my experiments). I then had a go at using them on to pages of a book, as I'd really like to work in this way with the Babel project, but i'm not quite sure how yet.

My first attempt at this failed miserably because my masking tape appears to be too sticky, and when i pulled it off it pulled the piece to bits. This was my second attempt, with out masking tape (still not much better). As a result of me being too impatient, this is scruffy, but some parts look nice and work really well. This could work and look really nice, I just need to take more time with it. Maybe I'll have another go at this one later?

This one is ok, but would have been more effective if done in Photoshop, with much cleaner and straighter lines.

The three experiments above would have worked better if not on the absorbent paper of the book pages. it works well in some places, but in others (most) instances it looks untidy and messy (and not in a good way). However, the text underneath the water color does work. So, my plan is to create some plain watercolors, then to scan these and layer them over my pages of text in Photoshop, then cut out sections, and just play with that idea and see what happens.
I have done a couple so far (see below) but will make a couple more today so that i have plenty to work with when I go into uni tomorrow.

This one was meant to be a deeper darker red, it's worked in some areas but not all, think I'll have another go at this later on, maybe with some different techniques to try and achieve a darker deeper color. I wanted to make one of these as an overlay for the page of text that talks about the red book.
